The Studio School (1971) educates the hearts and minds of children from preschool through eighth grade and nurtures the growth of their authentic spirit and character. Students learn to value intellectual and creative ideas and immerse themselves in the process of discovery. Studio's approach blends an understanding of child development with a working knowledge of how children learn, and a student-teacher relationship that is emotionally connective. A multi-layered curriculum presents subjects in terms of their relationships to one another – students are asked to make connections, investigate and explore ideas for deeper discoveries and original insights. Teachers work in small classes (maximum 16) and create a balance between instruction and exploration. The Studio School's new building includes a bright, airy library, science laboratory, gymnasium and theatre, sky-lit art room with a kiln for ceramics, a sunny outdoor yard, and a fully-equipped kitchen to complement the School's innovative Kitchen Science program where each day a small, mixed-age group of children learns about and helps to prepare a delicious and healthy lunch for the school community.
